BRIGGS TERRACE / PARADISE VALLEY EVACUATION DRILL
BRIGGS TERRACE / PARADISE VALLEY WILDFIRE EVACUATION DRILL
BRIGGS TERRACE / PARADISE VALLEY WILDFIRE EVACUATION DRILL, SATURDAY JANUARY 18
Neighbors,
On Saturday, January 18, 2020, at approximately 9:00 am, the Sheriff’s Department, in coordination with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, will conduct an emergency evacuation drill for Briggs Terrace and Paradise Valley residents. The purpose of the drill is to make sure that, in the event of a wildfire or other emergency, residents are prepared to evacuate and familiar with the evacuation route. We also hope to identify any “choke points” that may require special attention during an evacuation. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the drill so we can get the information we need, and so that we all understand how we need to work together to get off our mountain.
The cornerstone of the Sheriff’s emergency warning system is a “reverse 911” call system. Your first notification that the drill has started will be a phone call. So it is VERY IMPORTANT to make sure your phone numbers and emails are registered. Go to the www.alert.lacounty.gov website and register your landline telephone numbers, cellphone numbers and email addresses. It is very easy and could be life-saving. Note that your cellphone numbers and email addresses will not be on the Alert LA County system unless you opt-in and provide that information. And if your phone automatically sends unknown callers to voicemail, change that setting, at least for the morning of January 18.
After the Alert LA County notifications, fire engines and Sheriff’s vehicles will sound their sirens in Briggs Terrace and Paradise Valley as a secondary notification. If you do not receive the Alert LA County call, evacuate when you hear the sirens. If by 9:20 am you have not received the Alert LA County call nor heard sirens, evacuate at that time. There will also be a voluntary debriefing at the evacuation site if you want to stay a few minutes and learn more about how to survive a wildfire.
More detailed information will be provided tomorrow, Saturday, January 12th, in door hanger bags with instructions. The bags will include a short survey. It is important that everyone complete and turn in the survey at the evacuation site so the Sheriff and Fire Department can determine how effective the drill was. If you would like to help prepare and/or distribute the door hangar bags, come to the Briggs Avenue Sheriff’s Station tomorrow, Saturday, after 9:00 am.
Most of us moved to Briggs Terrace or Paradise Valley because of the topography, but that topography, with just one way out for hundreds of homes, makes it necessary for us all to cooperate with each other when our neighborhoods are threatened by a wildfire. Let’s all help the Sheriff’s Department and Fire Department as they work to keep us safe.
